Josh and Katey

One of my husband’s best friends and college roommate got married two weeks ago, and I took the pictures for their wedding.  It was so much fun for me and our friends that I hope more of our friends get married so I can photograph their weddings too!  Josh and Katey met and were married at Cresset Baptist Church in Durham, NC, and were married on May 2, 2009.

NYC Chapter 3

These final images are from the Ellis Island and WTC portion of our trip.  By this time, we were cold, unhappy, and had some minor wind burn on our faces.  It was bitterly cold- we had packed for 60, and instead it was 30 with 10 degree windchill on the harbor.  Whoopsie!

I <3 NYC – Chapter 2

On the second day of our visit, and our last day, we went to see the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, and the WTC site.  These are some images from the Liberty statue part of the trip.

News, Updates, and Camera gear

I can’t tell you how grateful I am to be in the position that I am.  How so?, you may ask…  Well, it goes like this.  My day job, that of an engineer enables me to fund my business as a photographer until I reach the threshhold of sustainability.  I’m not there yet, no where near there yet honestly, but it takes some time to build that up.  Obviously, you’re not going to be sucessful in business just by hanging a sign on your door that says “I’m in business!”  If only it were that easy.

During the winter months, when practically no one gets married, it’s the time to reavaluate your style, your gear, and your skills, and make some decisions.  I’m super excited to say that I’m now shooting with the new Canon 5D mark II camera for my work.  I love Canon cameras because they are sturdy and really take the perspective of the photographer in mind, versus dictating what the photographer should do with the camera.  This is a big step up for me, but, as you may be able to tell, I’m excited to finally be a on a platform that I won’t outgrown soon.

In the terms of skills, I am taking a variety of classes aimed at wedding photography and portrait photography.  One of those classes, offered at the MPLS Photo Center, is taught by a photographer I admire, Erin Johnson.  I love her work, and how she has expanded her business to contain more than just herself.  I feel it’s important to learn as much as I can, from as many people as I can.

That being said, I’m also excited to say that I am still working with one of my favorite photographers and people right now, Verna Pitts.  Verna gave me the great oppourtunity last year to shoot two weddings with her, and has invited me to assist with her this upcoming season.  I am super excited to learn more from Verna this year, and contribute as much as possible to her business.  What drew me to Verna was her ability to catch people at just the instant of joy.  Go take a look at some of her pictures, you’ll see what I mean.  If you had to ask me a second reason I love her work, it would be that she incorporates the landscape in her portraits and photography, which is very important to me.

Either way, it is an exciting year for me, keep in touch and call me if you need some portraits done!

yours, Kate
